Sustainability Starts With Personal Lifestyle Choices

Sustainability is a matter of personal choice(s). After more than 3 years of striving for a sustainable lifestyle, one that is balanced and integrated, I think I'm just about there. Well, much closer, anyway. Since taking on the role of Manager of Communications and Engagement with Ocean Networks Canada, I have been steadily letting go of other responsibilities and commitments. Teaching was the first to go. Not an easy choice, as I'll miss the engagement with students, but it demanded so much of my time, energy and attention...grading assignments especially. At the moment, I'm shutting down the not-for-profit society, Nous Autres Canada, Inc. (a.k.a EcoLiteracy Canada) that I have chaired for the past 10 years. Even EKOS, I'm pulling back on. At the moment, the company is just finishing up the "Learning to Live with Large Carnivores: A WildCoast Primer" which will be officially launched on Apr. 5th in Tofino. Tentative plans are in place for a phase ll which would entail the creation of a series of video public service announcements. At the core of the plan lies the idea of hosting a contest among local schools to see who can come up with the most innovative and effective ways to deliver the key social marketing message. There is a lot of interest and energy within the communities to pursue this idea; I'm just not sure that I want to commit to leading the process at this time. Perhaps later, after I've had a chance to take a breather while integrating in more time spent keeping fit, romping with my 5 year old nephew, playing my guitar or taking long, lingering walks with my wife at sunset across some stretch of wet, sandy beach. The pace I was living at was not sustainable; the new pace that I'm now settling into is already feeling wonderful...much more balanced and integrated.
